About University of South Florida

The University of South Florida, commonly referred to as simply USF, is a public research university located in Tampa, which is a Gulf Coast city in the US state of Florida and the county seat of Hillsborough County. During the 2008 census, Tampa’s population was estimated at a number of more than 340 000 inhabitants, fact which makes it the 53rd largest city in USA.

USF was officially founded in 1956, but it wasn’t officially named until one year later, (opening its doors to students for the 1st time in 1960), and it is the 9th largest university in the nation, as well as the 3rd largest one in the state, having a total enrollment of more than 46 000 students (2008).

The university consists of 18 colleges, schools and institutions, of which 7 colleges offer undergraduate degrees, being classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as engaging `very high research`. According to the Princeton Review, USF is among the `366 Best Colleges` in USA, also being named one of the nation’s top centers for advancement in research of treatments for Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s diseases.

The athletic teams from USF are known as the South Florida Bulls, who compete in the Big East Conference, since 2005, in various sports, including, among others, in baseball, basketball, football, golf, tennis and volleyball, being best known for their achievements in football and basketball, in which they’ve experienced most of their victories, in the past years.

The list of notable USF alumni contains resonant names such as Andrea Armstrong - notable American basketball player, Terry Bollea (Hulk Hogan) – professional wrestler, Elayne Boosler – comedian, Andre Hall - professional football running back, Denver Broncos, Tony La Russa - Manager St. Louis Cardinals, R. Gil Kerlikowske - former Seattle Chief of Police, and current Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy under President Barack Obama, as well as many other great people who have made themselves notable in various fields, after graduation.
